Cholera is a bacterial infection that can result in serious diarrhea and dehydration if not spotted quickly.
Some of the major symptoms include thirst, muscle cramps, diarrhea, rapid heart rate, and more.
During rainy seasons, chances of getting cholera increase and although it’s treatable, if left untreated, patients may die.
On September 2, 2021, the NCDC recorded a total of 55,145 suspected cases of cholera, including 2,141 deaths in Nigeria.
Here are five ways to prevent cholera especially in the rainy season.
1. Drink Clean Water
Whether you’re simply bathing or brushing your teeth, use clean water. To ensure water is clean enough for use, boil to kill all germs.
Chlorine tablets or liquid can also be used to purify water as well.

2. Wash your hands and face regularly
Pandemic taught us frequent hand washing which prevents germs. However, the use of soap and clean water is recommended. Before and after cooking, make sure you wash your hands.
Also, Wash your hands after using the toilet. Wash your hands regularly when caring for a sick person.
Sanitizers are also highly recommended but do not use before cooking.

3. Wash Utensils And Food Ingredients
All cooking utensils should be washed well with boiled or chlorinated water.
Vegetables, fruits, and other food ingredients should be washed and kept in a clean environment.
4. Cook Food Properly
In the fight against cholera, it’s important to cook food properly.
Seafood like fish, crabs, shrimps should be washed and cooked properly.

This is because the cholera bacteria is majorly found in water bodies like lakes, swamps, and mud pits.
5. Avoid Dirty Street Food
If you must buy street food like corn, Akara, Moimoi, suya, or others, make sure to get it from a considerably neat environment.
Watch out for collected bodies of dirty water like gutters, puddles.
