Who is Omah Lay 

Stanley Omah Didia  (born May 19 1997) who is popularly called Omah Lay is one of the Nigerian newest and young talented singers who woke up to the Nigerian music industry in early 2020.

He is known professionally as a fast-rising singer and record producer In Nigeria even though he has been in Nigerian Music Industry since 2019. Omah Lay became popular in 2020 after his hot single “YOU” went viral on the internet.

Omah Lay started as a songwriter and producer in Port Harcourt but later decided to step up his game by becoming the real singer because he wasn’t getting enough accolades from the people he had written songs for.

He then took the drastic action by making good songs from “Do Not Disturb to “Hello Brother”, these were released in his home town, Port Harcourt. KeyQaad, a record label brand who saw his brilliance signed him in 2019.

This made Omah Lay consider leaving his home town for the first time and relocated to Lagos for better recognition since the state is considered as the main Entertainment hub in Africa.

EARLY LIFE

Omah Lay was born in the city of Port Harcourt but he is a native of Ikwerre, Rivers State where he grew up as a talented songwriter and record producer before becoming a Nigerian Singer.

According to the fast-rising singer, Omah was gotten from my name and the Lay is the way my people call people who are far away.

Well, he is not the only one who has done music in his family, his grandfather had made a career as a drummer for one of the Nigerian finest highlife singers, Late Celestine Ukwu in the 1960s.

LIFE AND MUSIC CAREER

Omah Lay who was inspired by Duncan Mighty and Burnaboy tunes also loves listening to rap songs by Drake. This made him focus on the same music career path as his grandfather.

In his word “I wanted to be a rapper. I was part of a rap group, my name was Lil King,”. I really liked Drake and his flows so I wanted to be like that.”

On 14th of February 2020, Omah Lay released his official single “YOU” which was well received by many Nigerians. This also boosted his followers on all social media and gathered millions of streams on Digital stores.

When the official single was released, it was featured on Notjustok and Native Mag lists of freshmen to watch out for in 2020.

Although the “You” got a negative review from an article written on Pulse NG website for lacking Resonance. Funny enough, the popular blog website still further commended Omah Lay as a master with everything associated with the song’s hook”.

A few weeks after, Omay Lay dropped his official debut EP titled “Get Layd” which contains about five songs namely: Bad Influence, Lolo, You, Damn, Ye Ye Ye.

The debut EP recorded great success for him and apart from that his songs rated as most-streamed Afrobeat album on Digital stores such as Apple Music, Deepzer, Audiomack.

He later won the Apple Music Favourite New Artiste of the Month of June in Africa and on June 7, Omah Lay was invited for an interview on the new Apple Music’s Africa now Radio by DJ Cuppy.

In the exclusive interview, He also talked about his achievement in the new EP. The following month, he emerged as the debut star for Apple’s Africa Rising Campaign which made him an official singer in Africa.

When he was later interviewed by Notjustok, Omay Lay maintains that he is still the same introverted person that he was before his prominence.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENT

On August 2020, Omay Lay got featured on a new song titled “Pami” by a Popular Nigerian Disc Jockey, DJ Tunez alongside with reigning Nigerian superstars, Davido and Adekunle Gold.

His followers on Instagram has increased massively and at the moment, he has 339k followers on the verified account.
