From Ogwashi-Ukwu to Abia State southern Nigeria, relatives of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, the new World Trade Organization Director-General are already celebrating her appointment as being the first in Africa.
Right now, people have been visiting Ngozi Okonjo Iweala’s home town of Ogwashi-Ukwu in Delta State and her husband, Ikemba Iweala’s state of origin which is Abia State situated in South-East Nigeria.
To celebrate her new appointment, we will love to tell you seven real fact about the first woman to be WTO director General (Ikembe Iweala – Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s husband).
Dr Ikemba Iweala comes from Umuahia, the capital of Abia State while his wife is a native of Ogwashi-Ukwu in Delta State.
Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala’s father (Benjamin Kachukwu Okonjo) was a professor and the traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State before his death.
Ikemba Iweala’s early education was started in Nigeria, from his primary to his university education.
However, his early medical training was from the Popular University of Ibadan, Western Nigeria.
He also completed his compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a centre physician at the Rural Health Center, Igbaja in Kwara State, Northcentral Nigeria.
Ikembe Iweala completed his training at the General Surgery / Trauma and Neurosurgery in Manchester Royal Infirmary, Manchester and various other hospitals in England.
He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and also a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
After completing his training, Ikembe Iweala practised the profession at the University College Hospital, Ibadan and worked at the University of Maryland Medical Systems, Baltimore before becoming a clinical instructor at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington DC.
Dr. Ikemba Iweala is a philanthropist and the chairman of the IKE Foundation for Autism (IFA), one non-profit and non-governmental organisation that was established in 2008.
The goal of the organisation is to assist people who live with autism spectrum disorder and related need to achieve their full potential and live a more productive life.
Dr. Ikemba Iweala marriage to Ngozi Okonjo is blessed with four children; one daughter, Onyinye Iweala and three sons, Uzodinma Iweala, Okechukwu Iweala and Uchechi Iweala.
Their daughter, Onyinye is also an assistant professor of medicine for the division of rheumatology, allergy and immunology.
Uzodinma Iweala is an award-winning author and medical doctor. His first novel which is titled ‘Beasts of No Nation’ was launched in 2005 and Harper Perennial published it.
Even Cary Funkunga used his novel to act movie where Abragam Attah acted as Agu and Idris Elba as the commander.
On October 16, 2015, the movie was premiered on Netflix.
Okechukwu Iweala is a graduate of Social Studies from the prestigious Harvard University.
While Uchechi Iweala is an Orthopedic surgeon and spine surgery specialist at Catonsville, Columbia and Eldersburg.
According to Reports, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala will officially commence work on March 1st, 2021 in Genève Switzerland.
