Yoruba actress Sidikat Odunkanwi, widely known as Iyabo Oko, has sadly passed away following a prolonged battle with an illness.

Her daughter, Bisi Aisha, shared the heartbreaking news on her Instagram posts earlier today, accompanied by the captions, “It is well with your soul, mummy. RIP” and “Wurami, rest in peace.”

Iyabo Oko had been dealing with the effects of an ischemic stroke, a condition she had been courageously fighting for some time, as revealed by her daughter Olamide last year. Consequently, the actress had to take a step back from her acting career.

Interestingly, this is not the first instance where the actress has been mistakenly reported as deceased. In January 2022, she was erroneously pronounced dead after experiencing a cardiac arrest, but astonishingly, she regained a pulse and showed signs of life after three hours. The revelation of her comeback surprised many following her daughter’s earlier announcement of her passing in 2022.

Hailing from Iwo, Osun State, Iyabo Oko embarked on her acting journey in 1973 with the Eda Onileola theatre troupe. She gained widespread fame through her role in the Oga Bello-produced movie, Oko, which bestowed upon her the nickname ‘Iyabo Oko’.

The veteran actress swiftly became renowned for her remarkable performances in Yoruba movies such as Idunnu Okan and Okobo Dimeji.

Iyabo Oko is survived by her children and grandchildren, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the Yoruba film industry.
