Gloria Okon was a female drug smuggler whose story drew a lot of attention in 1985 mostly because of the circumstances surrounding her arrest and death.

On April 22, 1985, Gloria Okon was arrested at the Aminu Kano International Airport with substances suspected to be heroin and narcotics.

She was on her way to England when she was caught with 56.70 grammes of the substances, 301 dollars, 60 pounds sterling, N20,000 and 19,000 Italian Lira.

The law at the time stated that anyone caught with hard drugs will be punished by death.

This got a lot of people interested in the case as they humbly waited to know what Gloria Okon’s date will eventually be.

However, Six days after her arrest, Gloria Okon mysteriously died in prison which created a lot of eyebrows in the country.

A medical report later confirmed that Gloria Okon died as a result of food poisoning.

The report actually stated that Gloria Okon didn’t show any sign of illness when arrested until a day after.

A customs officer who kept Gloria Okon in custody said that on the fateful day that she was arrested, she asked for rice and beans and she was given.

Later she started complaining until she died mysteriously.

Before her death, Gloria Okon refused to cooperate with the law enforcement agency.

She dropped only a tiny clue which only indicated the first name with no last name.

By August 1985, A Judicial commission of inquiry was expected to investigate her death but by then, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida had come into power.

The late human rights activist and lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi tried to investigate Gloria Okon’s supposed mysterious death but he met a brick wall from the IBB Administration.

This led to a lot of conspiracy theories springing up.

While many claimed that Gloria Okon was working for the former first lady, Maryam Babangida and she was killed so the cat won’t be let out of the bag.

Others believed that Gloria Okon’s death was faked and the corpse sent to her family was not hers.

It was also said that she was living her normal life in another country while portrayed dead in Nigeria.

Reports say that none of Gloria Okon’s family members came to claim her body.

39 days after her death, her body was deposited at the Murtala Muhammed Hospital Mortuary.

Till date, the circumstance surrounding Gloria Okon’s death remains a mystery.
