What To Do If Your Smartphone Falls In The Water

Dropping your smartphone into a bath, pool or toilet is one of the horrible things that can happen to the delicate device, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world.

The few minutes after the incident will determine whether you will still be able to use your smartphone in the future or not.

But in this article, we have few things you can do if your smartphone falls in water.

Kindly be informed that these steps are for non-water resistant smartphones.

If you are using one of the latest smartphones, there is a high chance that it’s water-resistant and then the water damage on the device won’t be intense.

You can check your phone’s manual to find out what to do.

What To Do If Your Smartphone Falls In The Water - Put off the smartphone

1.    Put off the Smartphone

As soon as you have noticed that your smartphone fell inside water, the first thing you should do after taking it out of the water is to put it off.

This is because when the smartphone is still power on, the electrical charge flowing through its wet parts can lead to unwanted damage.

So putting off your device will help to prevent further damage to the parts and will also improve the chances that your smartphone will be able to function properly with slight or no negative effects.

2.     Avoid Using Hairdryer

I understand how horrible it is when your smartphone falls inside the water but you should try as much as possible never to use a hairdryer for the wet device.

Even though it’s a common truth that the work of a hairdryer is to get something dry faster, you also need to know the implication of using it to dry your device.

The heat from the hairdryer can cause more damage to the sensitive parts of the smartphone.

Even placing the device close to any other heating device will cause equal amounts of damage instead of helping it.

3.    Try to Remove the parts

These days, you will agree that most new smartphones now come with a non-removable battery but if your device comes with a removable option then this step should be the next thing you should do.

Apart from removing the battery of the device, what you can also do is remove the SIM card and the memory card provided you have one.

Avoid shaking your smartphone too vigorously so that the water won’t scatter to other parts.

4.   Clean The Smartphone

If your device just fell into freshwater, you need to clean it with a neat towel that doesn’t bring any lint.

Just ensure that you are very careful around the cracks and ports so that you don’t add to the damage.

However if your phone fell inside saltwater or drink like beer, all you need to do is to clean it gently with a wet cloth first to reduce the liquid and then use a dry cloth or towel to clean it.

5.    Try the Rice method

It might be new to some people but this rice method is one of the most popular solutions for any device that has just fallen into the water.

Putting your device into a bag of rice may not be so effective for new smartphones for one reason – there are fewer cracks and open areas for the rice to get inside your phone and absorb the moisture.

But still, putting your smartphone in rice can work well in some cases, so you can try it and see.

The minimum amount of time your smartphone is required to spend inside a bag of rice should not be more than 48 hours.

However, you can achieve the same results if you leave your smartphone on a dry towel that is exposed to open air.

After 24 – 48 hours, you can test your device by turning it on again.

If it comes up as expected then ensure you quickly back up important data from it as soon as possible since there are chances that it may go off after performing for a while.
